Why Self-Care Isn’t Working (And What Actually Helps When You’re Stressed)

Self-care has become one of the most talked about ideas in wellbeing.

We’re told to take baths, light candles, meditate, drink herbal tea and “prioritise ourselves”.

And while all of those things can be lovely, many people still feel overwhelmed, exhausted and stretched even when they try them.

So it raises an important question.

What if the problem isn’t that you’re bad at self-care?

What if the advice we’ve been given simply isn’t addressing the real issue?

When stress runs deeper

Most of the time when people feel overwhelmed, the problem isn’t that they need a bubble bath.

The problem is that their nervous system has been under pressure for too long.

Work stress, responsibilities, emotional load and constant stimulation can keep the body in a state of alert for weeks, months or sometimes even years.

When that happens, quick fixes rarely make much difference.

You might feel relaxed for a short moment, but the underlying stress response remains.

That’s why so many people say things like:

“I tried relaxing but it didn’t really help.”

It’s not because relaxation doesn’t work.

It’s because the body often needs deeper and more consistent signals of safety before it can truly slow down.

The difference between distraction and real restoration

There is a difference between things that distract us from stress and things that actually help the body reset.

Scrolling on your phone, watching television or even having a glass of wine might feel like relaxation in the moment.

But they don’t always allow the nervous system to fully settle.

True restoration usually involves things that help the body physically move out of stress mode.

This might include:

  • spending time in nature

  • gentle movement or stretching

  • breathing practices

  • quiet moments without constant stimulation

  • relaxation treatments that allow the body to properly switch off

These kinds of experiences help the nervous system feel safe enough to relax again.

Why many people struggle to slow down

One of the most common things I hear from people is:

“I don’t know how to switch off.”

And that makes complete sense.

When you’ve been living at a fast pace for a long time, slowing down can actually feel uncomfortable at first.

Your mind might keep racing. You may feel restless or even guilty for taking time for yourself.

This isn’t a lack of discipline.

It’s simply your nervous system needing time to adjust.

Giving your body space to reset

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is create intentional moments where your body is allowed to relax.

For some people that might look like walking in nature, journaling or quiet time away from screens.

For others, it might mean receiving support through practices that help the body move into a deeper state of relaxation.

Treatments such as Reiki, relaxation therapies or holistic treatments can allow the nervous system to slow down in a way that can be difficult to achieve alone.

Many people describe these moments as the first time their body has truly relaxed in a long time.

A different way to think about self-care

Self-care isn’t about escaping your life.

It’s about creating moments where your body and mind are supported enough to return to balance.

Sometimes that comes from small daily habits.

Sometimes it comes from allowing yourself to receive support.

And sometimes it simply starts with recognising that feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re failing it often means you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

A gentle reminder

If you’ve been feeling tired, stretched or constantly switched on, you’re not alone.

Modern life asks a lot from all of us.

But your wellbeing deserves the same attention and care that you give to everything else in your life.
